The story of SkinCeuticals began long before its official founding in 1994, rooted in the pivotal academic research of Dr. Sheldon Pinnell. A world-renowned dermatologist, professor, and skin scientist at Duke University, Dr. Pinnell dedicated his career to studying skin biology and topical antioxidants. In 1992, he made a revolutionary discovery, now known as the Duke Antioxidant Patent, which established the specific parameters required for Vitamin C to effectively absorb into the skin (pure L-ascorbic acid, a pH between 2.0–3.5, and a concentration between 10%–20%). This breakthrough created an entirely new category of skincare. After launching its first stabilized serums in 1997, the brand was acquired by L'Oréal in 2005, continuing Dr. Pinnell’s legacy of scientific rigor and medical-grade excellence.
